The beach has an area of 6.667 ha which is a national landscape of China. The seepweed grass grows spreading across the Panjin shi marsh area which is sprouting and growing leaves luxuriantly in the spring season. In the autumn, the grasses begin changing from orange-red into crimson.

The grass changes from green into orange-red on July and August, until to months of September and October, the whole of this swamp area turns into a crimson carpet. The above pictures was taken on August 7. Image: AFP

In the world, there are around 100 kinds of seepweed grasses growing at swamping lands. However, seepweed in Panjin Shi is Suaeda, a rare kind having a red colour.
Besides the red beach, Panjin Shi is also famous for its local products such as young bamboo shoots and carat (one kind of fresh crab). Here it is home of more than 260 kinds of immigrating birds, including the black beak gull and the rare red-crowned crane. Image: Xinhua Press

Because of locating in the Liaoning river mouth, and in the salted-sea of Liaodong, the land here is salted and contains many alkalines causing the Suaeda grass to grow strongly. Image: AFP

As a national landscape and conserve, the number of tourists coming here is restricted to protect the living environment of the ecosystem. The best time to visit is September and October when the beach is in its best state and the kind of birds also begin the immigrating season ahead of the coming winter. Image: AFP
