Progression of changing the name of a country is not simply, it draws a lot of issues afterward. However, many countries still changed their name although it took many years to completely use that name.
Holland changes into The Netherlands. This change is a way to unify all provinces in being a nation of the Netherlands. Two provinces with the name of 'Holland' will no longer be called South Holland and North Holland. Since January 2020, these provinces become a part of the Netherlands, like other regions. The change of the name is relating to many different revises, such as the name of the national teams.
Ceylon changed into Sri Lanka. Ceylon is a name given by a Portuguese for the land in northern Asia they discovered in 1505. After that, this land becomes a colonial of England empire and up to 1948, they just gained independence. One year later, the government of the island decided to change the name of the country into Sri Lanka. Although, it needs to 2011 that everything relating to Ceylon, from state agencies to enterprises just was removed. All must change entirely into Sri Lanka.
Swaziland changed into Eswatini. To ceremony 50th anniversary of independence from the rule of England, the king of Swaziland declared the name of his country will be changed into Eswatini in April 2018. The change gets no surprise to its people because they used that name for a long time. Eswatini is only a translation of Swaziland into the local language, meaning the land of the Swazis people. In addition, the new name will help foreigners not mistake this African country with Switzerland.
Burma changed into Myanmar. In 1989, the military government decided to change Burma into Myanmar in an effort to preserve the form of writing by the local language. Other reasons are that the former name only says about the biggest people group in the country which is Bamar (or Burmans) instead of a name representing 135 native communities. Some landmarks of Myanmar also changed its name such as Rangoon having the new name of Yangon and Irrawaddy changing into Ayeyarwady.
Siam changed into Thailand. The change of name of Thailand doesn't occur recently. The nation's name of the golden pagoda land got a change in 1939 by the King. In the Thai language, the name pronounces "Prathet Thai", meaning "the country of freedom people" and they express their respect to the first settlement who come here to find freedom from China.
The colonial of Germany in western South Africa changed into Namibia. After gaining independence from Germany, this African country changed its name to Namibia in 1990. Some time later, the name of the cities and regions in Germany language here also changed. Although, the local people don't like the proposals because they are used to the old names.
Irish Free State changed into Ireland. In 1937, with an intention of removing all relationships with England kingdom, Irish Free State changed its name into Ireland, or Éire according to the local language of Ailen.
Each nation spends millions of USD to change its name. Everything bearing the former name of the country such as maps, flag, and anthem or constitution, money... also need replacing by a new name. This requires a lot of time. People used to call their country by the old name must acquaint with writing and speaking by another name. These changes don't happen through a night and many people must ask themself whether the change of name is needed or not, but in the end, they all will accept.
